Long distance relationships sound good in theory, but can often be very hard to maintain. Even the most connected couples often have trouble keeping the spark going when doing so over hundreds or thousands of miles. The physical distance can cause problems with trust, not to mention the lack of sex that occurs in these types of relationships.
There may be a million reasons why you find yourself facing a long distance relationship. Military responsibility, family issues and careers are only a few of the reasons that people embark on this journey.
Overcoming the limitations of a long distance relationship may seem easy at first, but there are many factors that go into a relationship and maintaining these factors are much more difficult when physical distance is incorporated. There is good news however. Physical distances are much easier to overcome than emotional or personal distances. If you and your mate have a close relationship to begin with, the chances are much better for you to survive a long distance relationship. Of course, you will need to understand how to handle this scenario and steps that you can take to ensure that you handle each obstacle correctly.
Probably the greatest obstacle to overcome is sex, or the lack thereof. For men, this can be much more difficult at times. Without the sex that you have come accustomed to, and without her there to guide you in the right direction, you may find yourself wandering. Of course, she may find herself wandering as well. No matter how often they deny it, women need a sexual relationship as much as men do. The problem here is that many long distance relationships have ended simply because one or both partners find new sexual partners.
The thing to do is to practice abstinence. This may sound a little harder than it actually is. Abstinence means that you do not have a free pass to go out and find a one-night stand. Consider having a sexy conversation with your woman late at night. Phone sex is not all bad. If you are doing it with the woman that you love, it can be very satisfying. Although it may seem odd at first, at least for her, it can help both of you to make it through the bad patches until you see each other again.
Now that we have covered the most typical long distance relationship problem, let’s cover the most important. Communication is key in any relationship, particularly those that have obstacles. Keeping in touch with her is more important than ever if you are separated physically. Cell phones, pagers, online chat; all these things can help you to keep in touch with your mate. Be sure to spend the time talking about things in a good light. Complaining does no good for anyone. Do not get caught up with whining about missing her, when she will be home, etc. Spend the time together talking about the future, speaking tenderly to her and reminding her how much you love her. Keeping your communication open will help to ensure that you both feel much better about the separation and that you do not do anything stupid while you are separated. Get a webcam and spend some time face-to-face as often as possible.
Be sure not to let your life slip by while you are mooning away over your gal. Get out and have fun, just be sure not to have too much fun. Remember too that honesty is always the best policy. If you do something that you should not have done, be sure to be completely honest with her. You may just find that she is more understanding than you think. Long distance relationships can work, but only if you really want them to. If you think for a second that you would rather be single than endure this long distance torture, then be sure to come clean. There is no use in stringing her along while you are living life to the fullest.
